Get ready for an epic swim meet recap! The highly anticipated NC State vs. UVA dual meet did not disappoint, despite being shortened to one day due to a winter storm. The swimmers rose to the challenge, and what a show it was!
The Virginia Women and NC State Men Dominate
The UVA women's team stole the show, breaking an incredible 10 pool records! Meanwhile, the NC State men's team also shone, with Max Carlsen breaking two pool records and setting a new ACC record.
Women's Meet Recap: A Record-Breaking Extravaganza
Three UVA swimmers, led by the exceptional Claire Curzan, each broke two pool records. The meet began with a bang as the UVA 'A' relay team, including Sara Curtis, Emma Weber, Claire Curzan, and Anna Moesch, smashed the women's 200 medley relay record, finishing almost two seconds ahead of their own 'B' team.
Moesch's anchor leg split of 20.82 was a personal best, showcasing her incredible speed. NC State's Eneli Jefimova also impressed with the fastest breaststroke split in the field.
Virginia continued their dominance, winning and setting a new pool record in the 400 free relay. The team, including Curtis, Curzan, Madi Mintenko, and Moesch, finished just three hundredths behind the nation's leading time, an impressive feat.
Claire Curzan had an extraordinary day, setting two new pool records in the butterfly events and adding two more relay records to her name. Her morning performance in the 200 fly was particularly impressive, clocking a massive time of 1:51.35 and jumping to second in the country this season.
In the 100 fly, Curzan continued her winning streak, touching in 49.13, just off her personal best. NC State's Leah Shackley finished a close second.
Another standout performance came from Katie Grimes, who broke two pool records in the 1000 and 500 freestyle events. Her 500 free swim was particularly impressive, setting a new season best and leading a UVA top-three sweep.
Aimee Canny also had a successful meet, winning three events and setting a new pool record in the 200 breast. She also led a UVA sweep in the women's 200 IM.
Sara Curtis and Anna Moesch split the sprint freestyle events and pool records, with Curtis breaking the 50 free record and Moesch taking down the 100 free record previously held by Kate Douglass.
NC State's Men's Team: A Force to Be Reckoned With
While Virginia dominated the women's events, NC State's men's team picked up wins in three swimming events and both diving events. Leah Shackley won both backstroke events, showcasing her versatility.
The NC State men's team also won the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay, with Hudson Williams, Arsen Kozhakhmetov, Aiden Hayes, and Quintin McCarty leading the way.
Max Carlsen, a freshman for NC State, had a monster meet, setting two new pool records and a new ACC record in the 1000 freestyle. His time of 8:41.12 was a remarkable achievement, leading an NC State sweep.
Carlsen also picked up the win and a pool record in the 500 freestyle, showcasing his endurance and speed.
A Well-Deserved Victory
The Virginia women and NC State men's teams deservedly won their respective meets, showcasing their talent and determination. It was an exciting and record-breaking day at the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center.
