Nielsen's New Ratings Formula: Good News for Pro Wrestling (2026)

Nielsen has once again revised its ratings calculation, and this latest change seems to favor professional wrestling!

Last year's shift towards a new formula known as 'Panel + Big Data' has undergone further adjustments, and these alterations have brought good news for programs like Impact Wrestling and AEW Collision.

As of February 4, 2026, while we await complete reports on last Friday's television viewership, Programming Insider has indicated that WWE SmackDown achieved a rating of .29 in the crucial 18-49 age demographic for its January 30 episode aired on USA Network. This represents a significant 32% increase from the previous week.

We now have a clearer understanding of last Thursday’s TNA Impact Wrestling on AMC, along with Saturday’s AEW Collision on TNT. According to PWTorch, Impact garnered 201,000 viewers with a .04 demo rating in its third episode at the new network, reflecting a 17.5% increase in total audience and a remarkable 33% uptick in the 18-49 demographic. Meanwhile, Collision saw its viewership nearly double compared to its last episode on January 31, reaching 492,000 viewers and achieving a .07 rating—an astonishing 250% rise.

As fans of Tommaso Ciampa, we’re thrilled with these developments, but one can't help but wonder: what’s really going on here?

Cast your mind back to last year when Nielsen adopted its new ratings method called Panel + Big Data. Recently, Variety reported that Nielsen is making tweaks to this formula after receiving feedback, including criticism from The CW, the media rights holder for WWE NXT, which expressed concerns that Nielsen's changes negatively impacted almost all scripted content and pre-recorded shows.

Nielsen has not provided a comprehensive explanation for these changes (it’s their closely guarded trade secret), but they did share enough information for Variety to clarify that Nielsen plans to integrate findings from a consumer behavior study conducted by the Advertising Research Foundation. This organization advocates for standardized research practices in advertising and marketing, and its board includes leaders from major companies like Bank of America, Comscore, and Coca-Cola Co.

The new data is anticipated to be incorporated into Nielsen’s ratings methodology this week. This could lead to a one-time expansion in the number of households considered, or "universe," watching cable and broadcast TV, while possibly reducing the overall audience figures for streaming services.

In times like these, we often turn to Wrestlenomics for insights. Brandon Thurston commented on the Nielsen changes stating that these adjustments have coincided with multi-month highs across all wrestling shows tracked on traditional television. For instance, SmackDown's P18-49 rating of .29 is the highest it has seen in that demographic since November 21, 2025. Dynamite also reached its highest total viewership of 653,000 since September 17, 2025, alongside its best P18-49 rating of .09 since December 10, 2025. NXT reported total viewership of 674,000, marking its highest since October 14, 2025, though its P18-49 rating remained steady at .08 compared to the previous week. Impact’s third week on AMC saw its P18-49 rating equal to its premiere number. While it’s still early and more data is needed, the indications thus far suggest that the methodological changes may be partially counteracting the declines that pro wrestling programs have faced since the implementation of the Big Data + Panel approach in late September.

At this point, with only a limited amount of data available, it's challenging to determine just how significant the increases for Impact, SmackDown, and Collision are. We promise to keep a close eye on the ratings and provide updates as they come in.

What do you think about Nielsen's recent changes and their potential effects on the world of pro wrestling? Are you seeing the positive impact as well, or do you think there are underlying issues that need addressing? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
