The Jets' Offensive Makeover: A New Era Begins
In a bold move, the New York Jets have appointed Frank Reich as their new offensive coordinator, bringing a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the team. This decision comes after a disappointing season, with the Jets aiming to turn things around and reignite their offensive prowess.
But here's where it gets interesting... Reich steps into a role that was previously held by Tanner Engstrand, who only lasted one season. The Jets' offensive performance last year left much to be desired, ranking 29th in both yards and points per game. With a crucial quarterback question mark and a need for more offensive firepower, Reich's appointment is a strategic move to bolster the team's attack.
And this is the part most people miss... Reich wasn't the only candidate in the running. He was one of three finalists, undergoing a second interview with Aaron Glenn. The team also considered Greg Roman and Darrell Bevell, but it was Reich's unique skill set that caught their eye.
"Frank brings an exceptional blend of expertise, creativity, and composure," Glenn remarked. "He's lived and breathed this game, both as a player and a coach. His ability to adapt and utilize player strengths is unparalleled. I'm excited to see how he'll propel this team forward."
The decision to bring in a veteran like Reich was a deliberate one. Initially, the plan was to retain Engstrand but remove his play-calling duties. However, Engstrand opted to leave and join the Falcons, opening the door for Reich.
At 64, Reich is a seasoned NFL veteran, having served as a head coach for both the Colts and Panthers. His most recent role was as a senior advisor at Stanford, where he even stepped in as the interim head coach in 2025. With a regular-season record of 40-33-1 and two playoff appearances during his time with the Colts, Reich's credentials are impressive.
But it's not just his head coaching experience that sets him apart. Reich has also had successful stints as an offensive coordinator, winning a Super Bowl with the Eagles in his second year. He also held the same role with the Chargers, showcasing his ability to build and lead high-performing offensive units.
In addition to Reich, the Jets interviewed Ronald Curry and Lunda Wells virtually. However, it was Reich's extensive background and unique perspective that ultimately won them over.
Interestingly, Reich and Glenn share a history, having been teammates during the Jets' 1-15 season in 1996. This shared experience could add an extra layer of understanding and collaboration to their working relationship.
