I almost stepped on a rattlesnake, and it was a close call. The heat was intense, and I was sweating profusely, which made staying hydrated crucial. As I hiked, I encountered a large timber rattlesnake on the trail, and it rattled loudly to warn me of its presence. I had to wait for it to slither away, and it was impressive how quickly it could move. The trail maintenance in that area was lacking, with tall, overgrown grass hiding snakes and ticks. I reached the Eagles Nest Shelter early, but it was nearly full by mid-afternoon due to the heat and lack of water sources. The heat dome is a real concern, and hikers need to be cautious. This experience highlights the challenges of long-distance hiking and the importance of proper trail maintenance. As an upcoming Appalachian Trail thru-hiker, I'm excited to face these challenges and learn from them. I'll be sharing my journey and insights as I navigate the trail, so stay tuned!
