Endometriosis refers to a disorder of the uterine wall. One is diagnosed with endometriosis when tissue that is found in the uterus lining start growing outside the uterine wall. Among these treatment, choices are over the counter pain medications. Some over the counter prescriptions include Ibuprofen or Naproxen. This help in controlling the pain brought about by endometriosis when it starts acting up.
However, for some this drugs do not provide the needed pain relief. For those experiencing this, they should visit a doctor who will prescribe stronger pain relief pills after assessment and proper consultation. Another way of relieving these pains caused by endometriosis is through birth control pills which help in regulating and controlling the menstrual cycle. This acts as a pain reliever for many women.
Another method of relieving the pain caused by the condition is through gonadotropin-releasing hormone therapy. This therapy involves the stimulation of hormone which is responsible for causing menstruation to cease. This causes the tissue growth of the uterine wall to shrink which leads to a reduction int the growth rate of endometriosis. However, this type of treatment options has a lot of side effects associated with it.
Among the side effects caused by this therapy to help control and treat endometriosis are headaches, vaginal dryness, and hot flashes. This therapy can also bring about osteoporosis which is a disease of weakening bones.
Progesterone therapy is also a viable treatment choice for shrinking endometriosis tissues. Progesterone counters estrogen in the body and will help reduce the endometriosis tissues. However among the side effects of using this method is the stop of periods for the patient. Itís also accompanied by other side effects such as mood changes and weight loss, bloating and sexual complications.
Endometriosis can also be treated using surgical methods if other methods of treatments fail. There are several surgical procedures that can undergo to remove the endometriosis tissues from the body. Will look at this procedure in brief.
The first surgical procedure that can be carried out to remove this tissues is Laparoscopy. This procedure is an outpatient procedure. Itís also referred to as the belly button surgery and involves making a small incision and then threading a small telescope. This gives the doctor view of the area to be operated on. The telescope also contains cutting instruments that are used to remove the tissues.
The second process is laparotomy. This surgery is more serious and involves making a large incision which gives the doctor or surgeon access to a larger area to work with when an operation on the patient. Recovery time for this type of surgery is longer than that of the belly button surgery. This procedure is an inpatient kind of procedure.
The third surgical process is referred to as hysterectomy. This involves the removal of the whole uterus and may even lead to the removal of the ovaries which are responsible for menopause. However, this surgery is strongly advised against unless the endometriosis is at a very severe stage.
Endometriosis may lead to the barrenness of infertility because when eggs produced by in affected ovaries, they are not able to physically get to the uterus for ovulation and hence they go unfertilized causing the woman to be barren.
Any patient suffering from endometriosis should be very careful while choosing which kind of treatment they want. For those who still want kids, they should consider having it under control.

Sports and Men’s Bone Health

Young adult males who engage in sports like basketball may experience a decrease in osteoporosis risk as they age, a new study report.

Study researchers started by measuring bone mass in more than 800 young men between the ages of 18 and 20. They also retrieved data regarding the men’s exercise levels. After five years passed, these same men had bone scans and shared the exercise habits again.

Active young men who performed load-bearing tasks and sports and men who increased their exercise levels over five years increased their chances of building their bones.

The study found that young men who participated in load-bearing sports each week for a minimum of four hours improved their hip bone density by an overall average of 1.3 percent. Young men who were inactive over the course of five years experienced a hip bone density decrease that amounted to 2.1 percent on average.

When hip bones begin to thin and weaken in later years, fractures and breaks are more likely to occur. The study authors stated that men’s hip fractures can cause complicated disabilities and other health issues. This study was published in May’s Journal of Bone and Mineral Research issue.

Dr. Mattias Lorentzon of the Sweden’s University of Gothenburg stated that men who performed more load bearing activities between ages 19 and 24 had an increase in bone development. These same men also had larger bones in comparison to the sedentary men who were studied.

Experts believe larger bones with higher mass can reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become weak because they start becoming porous and cannot support the weight. This leads to fractures in later years, starting around age 50 at times.

Lorentzon added that osteoporosis may actually begin to develop as early as age 25. He notes that this makes it crucial for young men to stay active and increase their bone mass.

Lorentzon and other researchers discovered that basketball, tennis, soccer and volleyball are excellent sports for increasing bone mass. These load bearing sports require a lot of moving and jumping. This type of load bearing helps new bone tissue to develop.

Poor sleep, high blood pressure?

If you suffer from poor and interrupted sleep, you may be more at risk of developing high blood pressure, according to a new research study.
A new study has revealed that men who donít regularly reach the deeper stages of sleep, known as slow-wave sleep, have a much higher chance of developing high blood pressure over men who more easily reach deeper levels of restorative sleep.
These results remained consistent despite other factors, like weight and length of sleep time.
According to Dr. Susan Redline, a well-noted sleep specialist based at Harvard Medical School, a lack of reaching the deepest levels of sleep has been linked to an increased risk of high-blood pressure and other health issues.
Published in the August 29th edition of the Journal of Hypertension, these results seem to confirm other research studies that have linked sleep problems with obesity and the risk of heart disease, and chronic illness.
Dr. Redline studied close to 800 adult men, as part off of a Sleep Disorder and Older Men research project.  At the beginning of this study, none of the men showed signs of high blood pressure. They all had ideal blood pressure readings in the 120/80 range.  However, when they returned for a follow-up a few years later, 243 of the men studied were diagnosed as having high blood pressure.
For the study, the men were separated into four distinct groups. Men with low amounts of slow-wave sleep were placed in one group. While men with high amounts of slow-wave sleep were placed in another.
Other factors like age, race, and BMI were taken into account as well. Even after considering these parameters there was still evidence of a significant statistical link between lack of slow-wave sleep and high blood pressure.  Issues like sleep-associated breathing disorders and overall time slept were also factored in by the researchers.
Redline has also observed that slow-wave sleep seems to decrease with age. She has noted that children spend about 40 percent of their nightly sleep in the slow-wave state, while healthy adults average bout 25 percent of their sleep time in the slow-wave state.
Also, her study revealed that older men averaged about  11 percent of their sleep in the slow-wave stage. Men in the lower of the groups averaged less than 4 percent.  Further investigations have revealed that older men have lower levels of slow-wave sleep than women do.
Itís important  to understand that while this study does reveal a link between slow-wave sleep and high blood pressure, it doesnít necessarily prove that there is a causality.
What the study does indicate, is that getting reaching regular levels of restorative sleep is very important. According to Dr. Alberto Ramos, from the University of Miami Sleep Disorders Clinic.
Most experts do concur that not getting enough sleep can have a negative impact over time. This can include an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Ramos does note that the both the level and quality of your nightly sleep is extremely important to a personís overall health. In fact, it may be just as important as the amount of sleep the average person achieves every evening.  And can help lower the risk of health problems and high-blood pressure.
The exact mechanism of how this works is not completely understood, however, both Redline and Ramos are  adamant that achieving deep levels of sleep is important.
Dr. Redline advises that during sleep a personís blood pressure falls. It also appears that most of this natural blood pressure drop occurs during the slow-wave cycle. She theorizes that this naturally occurring night-time drop in may aid in keeping blood pressure levels low during the day.
Dr. Ramos also agrees that this may be the explanation for the link between a good nightís sleep and overall cardiovascular health.
There are quite a few things that adults can do to increase the amount of deep sleep they get.  According to Dr. Redline itís important to avoid anything that interrupts sleep repeatedly and awakens you during the night.
Also assessment for disorders that interrupt your sleep, like sleep apnea, can also help you achieve a more restorative night’s sleep.
Both Ramos and Redline agree that itís important for adults to be mindful of sleep quality and not just how long you sleep.  Dr. Ramos noted that the link between the lack of deep sleep and hypertension remained consistent, even when weight was  researched as a factor. Those achieving the lowest level of deep  sleep were also heavier in weight than the other groups.  He advises that watching your weight may also have positive effects on your nightly sleep quality.
